The chapter house survived the collapse of the choir in 1696, but its roof also collapsed in 1750. The chapter house is a reflection of the former importance of the church and the whole town, the manor being granted to the Bishops of Durham in 1086, with the founding of a collegiate church in 1267. English Heritage provided a new roof for the chapter house in 1984.
