The fleet of 450 (also “Castle”) class diesel electric railcars was introduced in 1986. An economy measure to replace older stock, they were built using new bodies on old ex-BR Mk1 underframes and re-conditioned engines from withdrawn NIR stock dating from the mid-60’s. They will be replaced by a fleet of Spanish-built vehicles due for delivery in 2011-13. The trains are the 10.57 Larne Harbour – Belfast Central (left) and 10.42 Belfast Central – Larne Harbour. Image shows the replacement trains (February 2012).
