Odeon Cinema, Lothian Road

The block was built in the 1930s as government tax offices, which were later converted to service flats. The Odeon was formerly the Regal, then the ABC and the Canon Cinema. It was the Edinburgh venue of the Beatles' first major British tour in 1963 when it was the ABC. "The west side of Lothian Road was quite rural with the canal basin and a bit of hedgerow here and there, and a few coal depots where the barges pulled by strong horses arrived and deposited their loads.
