In the centre of the view is the preheater tower of Padeswood cement plant's No 4 kiln. The kiln itself is the horizontal cylinder immediately to the right. This high-efficiency kiln was commissioned in 2005. The plant was originally commissioned in 1950 with two wet-process kilns. Kiln 3 - a long dry process kiln - was commissioned in 1964. The present kiln replaces the earlier ones, and is probably the most energy-efficient in the UK. For more details, see http://www.cementkilns.co.uk/cement_kiln_padeswood.html.
