Looking towards Cammell Lairds Shipyard

This grid square in 1820's saw the birth of the renowned Birkenhead shipbuilding tradition when John Laird opened his Cammell Laird yard (to the right of the photo), sadly very little remains of the original today except some ship repair sheds. In the centre, a ship can be seen in the outer basin which is still used. The building to the left (SJ3288) was formerly the Royal Castle, a pub with a rock/biker heritage going back many years. The pub sadly lost its trade with the demise of Cammell Lairds, as it was situated opposite the shipyard gates, but it has now become The Hotel California, a live music venue and rock club.
