The tramway was initially built, believed to be after WWII, to take building materials to a Loch to enable a dam to be built for water supplies, heaven knows why as we seem to have more than our fair share of rainfall on Lewis! The remains of the track and of one of the bogies was still on site in the mid 1970s. All traces of the former rail are fading fast as Scottish Water are laying a pipeline along the route to transport fresh water from the surrounding lochs to their works near Newmarket. My thanks to Dr. Ali Whiteford for the updated information.
