Other photographs on this site attest to the picturesque nature of the scenery around the village of Llanmaes and the Vale of Glamorgan in general. As in many other areas there have been instances of encroachment on this scenery in the form of industrial development and change of usage. Soon this view will disappear, this time with the expansion and regeneration of the nearby airfield, once the largest of the RAF's sites in the UK, which is now scheduled to become the Defence Technical Academy, formerly called the Defence Training Academy, a massive development that is intended to meet the training needs of all three of the UK's military arms. Training is to be contracted out to a civilian organisation that will utilise the resource to the maximum and embrace the training of overseas personnel in addition to those of the UK. In addition to this venture an aviation based industrial park will also be established on the existing airfield. A new access road is planned to be built across this and the surrounding landscape, running from the B4265 to the south west to the north east in addition to other planned developments that include a housing development of some 500 houses for servicemen and their families. It is to be expected that once planning permission is granted, further development will occur.
