An old style water pump. On closer inspection it was made of plastic (is nothing sacred). It reminded me of my childhood as I was often sent to "fetch a pail of water" from the pump at the bottom of our lane. We used large white enamelled buckets - too much and you couldn't carry it - too little and you had to go again.
