The Aylsham & District War Memorial Cottage Hospital

The cottage hospital was attached to the eastern end of the east wing of the former St Michael's Hospital > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1293920. It was the resident GP, Dr Alec George Holman, who first proposed that a cottage hospital should be built in Aylsham. Funds were consequently raised by local residents, and combined with subscriptions from the Aylsham and District Ambulance Fund Committee, the Aylsham Nurse Fund Committee and the Aylsham Welfare Committee, sufficient money was raised to build and equip an 11-bed hospital as a living war memorial. The hospital was opened in 1956. It facilitated the treatment of local patients under hospital conditions and was also used for patients recuperating closer to home after treatment further afield. Demolition of one end of the building reveals the old entrance into the hospital ward. At the time this picture was taken (in 2009), a security fence surrounded the site of a new housing development, St Michael's Place, which included the redevelopment of the former hospital complex.
