The central taking-in door suggests that this building shows the first stage of the factory system; the four houses probably had a shared third floor running the length of the block, in which looms were installed. The houses are adjacent to Lydgett Farm and might have been built by the farmer. The building is captioned 'Bastile' on the 1854 six-inch map and 1893 1:2500 map - the latter shows it divided into four.
