400KV pylons passing through Orchard Copse, North Boarhunt. An intrepid National Grid employee is travelling toward the camera in a cart suspended upon the lower two of the four conductors comprising a particular phase of the righthand circuit. Compared with those above, this bundle can be seen to be separated, because the man is removing, one by one as he encounters them, the cross-shaped separators that normally hold the four conductors in configuration. The purpose of so doing, I am told, is to enable a robot to run along each conductor and test it so see how much grease remains within. Each conductor consists of many aluminium wires wrapped spirally with a central steel core for strength. Grease is applied at time of manufacture to prevent ingress of moisture and pollutants which would greatly accelerate corrosion. Men can also be seen standing upon each of the two lower cross arms of the pylon at left. Next Image
