This path was formerly a route for horse and carriage, constructed in the 1770s so that the aristocrats of Shugborough Hall (The Ansons) could go to church without have to walk over the narrower packhorse bridge over the River Trent. The iron bridge over the Trent and Mersey Canal can just be seen ahead, and another bridge (long gone) crossed the river beyond.
