The Stanhope tree http://www.northpennines.org.uk/Pages/PublicationItem.aspx?DocRef=87 was found along with other fossil trees in a sandstone quarry at Edmundbyers Cross Image in 1915. It was assembled from large pieces in the churchyard of St. Thomas' Church Image in 1964. The fossil tree is of the genus Sigillaria, a Carboniferous ancestor of modern clubmosses and could grow as high as 30 metres. There is another photo of the tree by P Glenwright here Image
