The Lower Chequer, Sandbach

The pub gets its name by contrast with the Swan and Chequer, higher up the hill at the west end of the High Street. This was my father's "local" for many years. The pub is grade 2 listed (list entry 1130388); the listing describes it as "Late C16 or early C17 but much altered and restored and retaining few original features" with the half-timbering being a modern imitation rather than part of the original structure.
