The square has been transformed with 3,600 square metres of high quality granite paving. The largest blocks in the square measure 1.5m by 750mm and each weigh about half a tonne. The granite was specially imported from China. The fountain was designed by Fountains Direct Ltd, from Surrey. It recirculates 37,000 litres of water every two hours and is serviced by a pump room underneath the fountain. Mersey poet Roger McGough was commissioned to write the poem which surrounds the fountain. About the nature of water, the poem is designed to be read from any starting point around the edge of the fountain.
