Vertical concrete piles to protect the bank of the Grand Union Canal from erosion are capped with a substantial horizontal concrete casting. At intervals, information about the length of the piles and the safe dredging depth are moulded in the concrete (BWL stands for 'below water level'). This section of the Grand Union was extensively improved during the 1930s, partly as a way of relieving unemployment.
