These knurled old trees are fruit trees in Sergeant's Orchard. The seven acres of orchard and fields were donated to Essex Wildlife trust in 1996 see http://www.essexwt.org.uk/visitor_centres__nature_reserves/sergeant's_orchard/ for more info.
