Great Thornton Street flats

Great Thornton Street flats or possibly Walker Street flats if my memory serves me correctly were opened in 1965. Seen here in the process of construction in 1963 they were the first high-rise flats that many in the city had seen. I have been unable to confirm my belief that they were the first to be built in Hull. The advertising hoardings are of interest although not easy to read at this resolution. From right to left I am able to see that Teals are advertising 'Better Bedding' (better than what? one wonders) at their stores on Anlaby Road and Newland Avenue. Texol is just the thing for your lavatories, sinks and drains, whilst Zopol is a liquid washer but I am unable to establish what one washed with it - a Google search came up with some surprising but irrelevant results. You could see Adam Faith at the Grand Pavilion in Bridlington for between 4/- and 7/6 - that's 20p to 35½p for those whose memories don't go back pre-decimalisation - I am indebted to Paul Harrop whose researches confirm that Adam Faith did indeed do a summer season in Bridlington starting on 24 June 1963. Then we move on to 'Join the Double Diamond Club - Drink the Beer the Men Drink' - no PC nonsense there then. The next three posters proclaim 'Let's Go With Labour And We'll Get Things Done' - again, thanks to Paul Harrop for his suggestion that this places the date of the photo in the spring before the local council elections. Beyond that is a Wm Younger's advertisement and further than that I am unable to make out the detail. I am sure someone out there will be glad to be reminded of Teals and Texol.
