This is one of only about 150 Edward VIII-reign postboxes still in use – owing of course to his very short reign and that, due to the controversial nature of that reign, many of the boxes that had been cast with the E VIII R cipher had their doors replaced. On top is the remains of a Post Office direction sign, indicating Walkford Post Office which was next door until its closure a few years ago. The postbox is emptied finally at 5pm on weekdays and at noon on Saturdays. In the background, the newly built premises occupy the corner plot which previously contained a petrol filling station.
