At Easter a 6500 tonne underpass is being jacked under the West Coast Main Line requiring a four day closure of the railway. The box was cast on site adjacent to the railway and will be pushed into place by hydraulic rams at a rate of 2.5 to 3m per hour. Excavation will take place to remove the embankment ahead of the advancing box which was programmed to take 27 hours to complete the slide. Progress was about 0.5 to 1m per hour this morning but appears to have accelerated as the team got into their stride. The box had moved 26.5m and had completed over one third of the proposed slide. The jacking work will continue through the night.
