Built as a drill hall for the local rifle volunteers in 1869, and extended by them as a roller skating rink in order to raise funds. This area, between Portland Place West and the river, is affectionately known as Clubland on account of the many local organisations based there, some in buildings which date back to its time as the depot of the Board of Health.
