The name refers to the embankment protected by the fence. This earthwork is a surviving section of the park pale of Old Basing, sometimes called the Pyotts Hill Entrenchment. It would have enclosed an area set aside as a deer park. The exact date of the construction is not known, but it is essentially a medieval earthwork (11th to 15th century).
