The Whitchurch Arm of the Llangollen branch of the Shropshire Union opened in 1811 and stretched from New Mills to Castle Well near the town centre. Restoration of the first 400 metres, to Chemistry Bridge (left), was completed in 1993 and now provides long-term moorings. Although the canal branch currently stops just before the bridge, the former route has been preserved from building by the creation of the Whitchurch Waterway Country Park and there are ongoing plans for extension.
