The map shows the line to be straight for nearly 2km east of East Malling station. This view shows how the gradient changes part way along. Contours on the Explorer map show that it is level at around the 40m contour on the first section, then rises to 50m before the bend in the distance. The speed limit is 80mph, and these Electrostar trains will have no difficulty reaching that speed on a long straight. The cables in the foreground carry the current across the break in the powered third rail over the foot crossing from which this photo was taken.
