Three footpaths pass through Ridley Shield but they aren't easy to pick up. We entered along the track and hoped to follow the footpath to Blackburnhead. A new fence had been erected around the perimeter which can easily be seen on the 1:25000 Map. There was barbed wire the full length of the fence and where we expected a stile there wasn't one and we had no desire to climb over the fence. There is a stile to the west of Ridley Shield and there should be two more. Fortunately it didn't spoil our walk but we were unable to locate Rennies Linn.
