The top of the monument is inscribed "This cross is erected as a mark of thanksgiving for the recovery of the body of her husband by Margaret Countess of Crawford", and the column is inscribed," Under this spot the body of Alexander Earl of Crawford sacriligiously stolen from the vault under the Dunecht chapel lay hidden during 14 months".
