Gardner Street was the original name of this settlement within the parish of Herstmonceux and was still be used as late as 1937. The church itself is two miles to the south of the village it now shares its name with. This view looks west along the street towards the yellow building which is the Woolpack Inn which marks the junction of Gardner Street, Hailsham Road and West End.
