On the maps of 1850 and 1945 this field was part of the wood. The white dot just to the right of the path in the centre of the photo is a notice headed 'University of Huddersfield' (who own the Storthes Hall Estate) stating that anyone walking in the wood does so at their own risk. A nice change from the usual 'Private - keep to the footpath'.
