Carrying the ancient Lewes to Brighton route over the modern one. The track left Southover then climbed the ridge to Kingston before following the crest of the Downs towards Race Hill then descending into the old town of Brighton. The A27 Lewes By-Pass was built in the mid 1970s to ease congestion in the narrow streets of the town.
