Between 1959 and 1971, platform 5 was the dedicated terminus platform for the reliable and highly-regarded electrified commuter service from Altrincham. Alas, Altrincham electric trains are no more, having been downgraded to a tram service in 1992. Platform 5 is now mainly used by local services to and from the Warrington direction. The flats to the left of the station are part of Manchester's 1990s building boom.
