The sign on the left describes the following... During the Commonwealth (1664-1660) acting was forbidden by the Puritan authorities. In January 1652 four Richmond men were arrested for "acting and interlude att Easby, Gilling, Masham and Well". Tried before local magistrates they were ordered to be "stripped to the middle and whipped till their bodyes be bloody for rogues". They were: William Archer 1630-1669, Stephen Kirby 1630-1668, John Binckes 1615- The spelling of the above in the quotes is correct as per the sign, of which I have a close-up
