Kingdon Avenue is named in commemoration of Fr Claude Drewitt Kingdon (1859-1949) who was Curate of Prickwillow from 1882 and then Vicar from 1888 to 1917, before eventually becoming Rector of Whitstone in Cornwall. Arthur Kenelm Astbury in "The Black Fens" (Cambridge, 1958, p. 73) tells us that "all of Prickwillow north of Middle Fen Bank is on the rodham [dried raised bed of an extinct watercourse] of the original Ouse east of Ely; and the post-war housing estate of Kingdon Avenue actually curves to follow a bend in the old river bed." Simon Bradley, in his 2014 revision of Pevsner's guide, mentions that "Kingdon Avenue has the Isle of Ely's best postwar houses."
