The first public baths in Birmingham opened on this site near the city centre in 1851. An Act of Parliament was passed in 1846 'to encourage the establishment of baths and wash-houses' which permitted a local authority to incur expenditure in erecting Public Baths. The current building dates from 1931. It contained a gala swimming bath, private baths, Turkish and Russian baths, offices and a repair and maintenance depot. The gala bath was damaged during the war and later re-built. It also acted as a boxing venue. Closed in 1980 it was a store for the Birmingham Diocese. http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/GenerateContent?CONTENT_ITEM_ID=1600&CONTENT_ITEM_TYPE=0&MENU_ID=10277
