Still has the old Victorian postbox in the wall near the door. Hickstead is a small hamlet in the parish of Twineham based around a manor house and a farm, the main London-Brighton road bought limited growth, the post office and what was first called the New Inn, later named the Castle Hotel then Castle Inn, which can be seen across the roundabout. Until the early 1990s this stood on a crossroads on the A23 with Hickstead Lane heading west and Jobs Lane going east. When the entire trunk road was made dual carriageway this section was bypassed and made a junction with a new link road, the A2300, to Burgess Hill.
