This is one of many pubs which are closing because of changing social habits, drink-driving laws, and increasingly unfair brewery (and "venture capitalist") rent and alcohol pricing policies, which favour the supermarket and off-licence rather than the public house landlord, tenant or manager. Unless such an establishment is in the right place, and can provide good quality food at a reasonable price for most of the day, many more formerly well patronised houses are doomed, it seems. Here is a picture from two years ago, when developers were demolishing pubs and building housing to make fat profits. Image Now that the "credit crunch" and heavy falls in house prices are overshadowing such activity, one wonders how many of these schemes are now coming to a grinding halt. How many more years will sights (and sites!) like this remain as profit expectation disappears and investors back off?
