Information taken directly from the plaque on the front of the hall:- "The townhall was built in 1748 to replace an earlier Guildhall which stood in the middle of Broad Street. The ground floor arches of the present building were originally open. In 1828 during the reign of George IV, the old upper storey was taken down and rebuilt, to provide more spacious accommodation for Quarter Sessions, at that time still held in Montgomery." The clock on the hall was erected in 1921 in memory of Alderman Nicholas Watson Fairles-Humphreys, who served as Town Mayor no less than 15 times.
