Taken at an uncharacteristically quiet moment, this section of Broadway lies between St George's Square and the Butterworth Lane/ Owler Lane junctions. Unusually, when laid out in the late 1920s Oldham council retained ownership of the land for six feet beyond the solidly built brick garden walls of houses adjoining the road. The intent was to facilitate widening of Broadway at some future date to 3 lanes in each direction, with the possibility originally of using the central lanes for tram lines on reserved track. The pavement would have been reinstated using the first six feet of land in each house's garden! Over the years, the council's ownership has been successively challenged with each house sale under "squatters' rights" legislation, so compulsory purchase would now be required.
