This stone set in a private garden with the date 1722 marks the spot where the last witch was burned in Scotland. Some records give the date as 1727. The victim was Janet Horne whose only 'crime' was to have given birth to a child that had a birth defect. Her tormentors took as 'evidence' of the rightness of their action the fact that she stumbled over her prayers said in gaelic during her final moments at the stake. Roll on the Enlightenment a few decades later!
