The supermarket was opened in 1985 on the site of Cox's pill factory and the western end of the Lewes Road viaduct. The one way system was built with it part of it being built on the site of the auditorium of the former Gaiety Cinema which opened in 1937, became the Ace in 1965, the Vogue in 1979 and the Classic in 1979, it was shut in 1980 and demolished in 1983. The one way system is not popular and causes some confusion particularly with traffic trying to cross these lanes when coming from a direction which is not straight on. The problems are exacerbated by supermarket's car park which is underneath the store and is entered and exited onto this stretch of road, as well as the petrol filling station whose exit is on the left.
