This school and chapel was built at the request of Mary Brunel, wife of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It was to provide a school and chapel for the workers and children on Brunel's Watcombe Park estate. The piece of land known as Barn Close was purchased for £250, and it was intended to include workers' cottages as well as the school and chapel. Later it served the local population as a chapel. It closed in 1928 and became two separate private dwellings. The closing was due to the establishing of St. Martin's, Barton, as a mission church.
