Winter 2008 has seen a major project to clear scrub and to fell ash and sycamore trees from the seaward side of the town, along the Marine Walk. Some objections have been raised but the work was badly needed to open up the area once again. The trees and bushes had colonized the area to the exclusion of other plant growth and in addition had obscured the spectacular views out to sea.
