Centre of a recent controversy when it was purchased by Accommodata for housing asylum seekers. Local opposition put a stop to that plan but the hotel, once a popular venue for weddings and dances, has now closed and will probably be boarded up rather than sold on. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/2673149.stm for the BBC news story from 2003. I understand the hotel is now (2007) undergoing refurbishment.
