A modern development of flats now stands at the top of Friary Hill. The Square was once known as Bull Stake Square which was also Hardy's name for it. When he was sixteen he once witnessed a public hanging of a woman outside the prison gates in the area which is now the prison carpark - the edge is just visible on the left.
