The line of the original Dundee-Newtyle railway ran up a 1:20 incline to Balbeuchley. Carriages were drawn up by means of a stationary steam engine. This part of the line was abandoned in 1861 but the route is clearly evident on the ground with cuttings and embankments still visible.
