Worth a second look

The historical value of this unprepossessing building on the junction of Market Street (the A58) and King Street is revealed in the sandstone plate half-concealed behind the central drain pipe. Still there is carved 'Cooperative Society Limited 1864", whilst the records show that the empty space above once bore the words 'Hindley Friendly'. The Rochdale Pioneers Co-op Society was formed in 1844, so this building shows when the movement reached Hindley, and its size shows its importance to the community at that time.
