These premises have been used by the Air Training Corps (ATC) and Army Cadets for training since at least 1940. At the rear of the premises is a small training ground once used for marching and band practice. Thirteen ATC cadets trained here gave their lives in World War II. During the 1950's the ATC band paraded to and from St Mary's church, attracting much local interest and also took part in the ATC massed band at the Royal Tournament (1957) held at Olympia.
