Taken from the tower of the old cathedral church of St. Michael, looking westwards down the line of the Upper and Lower Precinct shopping areas towards Mercia House[1], the residential tower block at the bottom end of the Lower Precinct. To the right of Mercia House is the red sandstone tower of St John's Church. To its left a little further into the distance is the GEC factory (formerly Rudge-Whitworth) in Spon Street, now replaced by an entertainment complex. In the foreground, Broadgate by 1983 has been altered from a garden traffic island to a less formal promontory with roads on three sides. A ramp has replaced stairs to the upper levels of the Upper Precinct. Left foreground is Pepper Lane, running towards High Street, with a surviving pre-war Martins Bank building (demolished in later developments).
