Ancient seamen looked upon the dolphin as a creature who would help them in storms by twining itself around the anchor cable, thus preventing the anchor of dragging. The name has been used by ships of the Royal Navy from 1646 until the present day. Dolphins also figures in the coats of arms of the Fishmongers Company and the Company of Watermen and Lightermen.
