Originally the Swimming Baths was built in 1970 on some of the land known as Oxley Park ... this land was donated by a local Fruit Farmer, Thomas Oxley in 1921. The Sports Hall was added and opened in 1973 and other additions, such as the Bowling Hall, have created, what is now known as, the Leisure Centre. Image Image A plaque inside the Leisure Centre advises that the Leisure Centre was officially opened by Walter Winterbottom CBE ... a name well known to people born before (say) 1960 - probably not to those born later. For these people follow this link ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Winterbottom Update in May 2013 ... The Leisure Centre is closed pending a decision to demolish it or pass it over to the Residents to run. Whilst everybody waits ... the Daffodils keep blooming ... see ... Image Image
