The 14th century cross, Clearwell

Situated in a gentle valley, south of the old market town of Coleford is Clearwell, once known as Wellington, meaning ‘the place of the spring’. Viewed from High Street looking along the road to Newland. The building behind the cross is the Wyndham Arms. The base of the cross is 14th century, the head and shaft were replaced in the 19th century when the church was being built in its new location.
